Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion: Real or Fake PageRank Update In Progress (round 3)

• Lincoln · 2 years ago
I checked the datacenters for my site out of curiousity and it looks like I've gone from a PR2 to a PR4 almost across the board. :-O

I'll remember this occasion as the very brief moment in time when my humble little blog had the same PR as ProBlogger and yours. :-D

Mine is anywhere between 0-4 depending on which data centre you believe. In addition Everton over at Connected Internet has just had his collar felt and dropped to from 6 to 3.

I've given up trying to second guess what's happening. My gut feeling is that there is a slap happening and it's going to take a couple of weeks for the dust to settle.

I also wonder, as Maki did over at Sphinn, whether or not Big G have noted the furore over this and are perhaps adjusting the manual penalties dished out to the higher profile or more vocal sites.

UPDATE: Just noticed one of my other sites has dropped from PR6 to PR4 in the last couple of hours :(

I wonder once the PR update is finally done if most of the blogs we thought got penalized will just end up retaining the same PR they had before? Man how stupid would we all look.
• AndyBeard · 2 years ago
With out the noise being made, we might have been stuck with what we had 2 days ago, but that still doesn't let Google off the hook.
There are still "punishments in reputation" on that list, just look at Everton at Connected Internet, though that might resolve to a 5 eventually.
• Amish Furniture · 2 years ago
I absolutely agree. I do not have the slightest doubt that the noise was unsettling for the big G. Good going. It is getting more and more interesting.
• Lincoln · 2 years ago
Andy, I really hope the blogosphere does have that kind of influence with Google. It'd be nice to see Google can't initiate a controversial policy without suffering a serious backlash over it.

Andy without question you have been defamed by Google and wronged on so many levels. No matter what people should do, some will adjust your site's value based on that number.

PageRank shouldn't matter because it's obviously a joke. That doesn't change reality though. Without question your business has been hurt because of this and in all you should be compensated.

Well according to a thread on Digital Point and according to iWEBTOOL, You Tube, a Google owned company, has dropped from PR8 to PR3 so maybe the whole thing is a data centre issue and Matt and all the boys are laughing their socks off at us right now.

You know, it would make sense. AdSense data has been screwed through all of this too.

yep Digital Photography School is back up to a 6 again too.

This is definitely looking like a penalty for selling links from my analysis - and not a blog network linking penalty.

It looks like I'm actually getting kicked up a notch, from a 4 to a 5. Then again, I've never sold any kind of links (I guess you need traffic for that to happen).

Haha, YouTube seems to get a PR 3 now, and my lousy old blog now has 4 on most of the DC's (which it has never been before). Incidentally, the same DC's that are still showing YouTube as an 8, are still showing my blog as a 1.

I wonder what the heck they are up to! Oh how they would benefit from some transparency at this point.

Hi Andy

It's just like the good old days of DC watching again isn't it!

I think Courtney Tuttle will settle at a PR3 if the results across the network of sites I monitor are to be borne out here too.

I actually think the new PR brings a (very little) of respect back to the green bar (dare I say that) :)

Sites with a more obvious manufactured or irrelevant (?) linking profile / PR (some of mine included) seem to have been hit. I always have a few quality links in any link profile I massage so I didn't get hit too bad (don't sell links either, anywhere).

Good bit of research - will be Sphinning it (that got a PR 6 by the way).

Theres definitely something odd going on. I have 50 sites and I'm usually pretty accurate in my own predictions of my sites upcoming PR. So far the "updates" to the PR on many of my sites is incredible inaccurate.

For instance, my blog which received a PR3 shortly after it was created after the April update. That was after doing VERY little with the blog and I do mean little.

Now I've built the blog considerably and expect a 4 or 5 and it's still showing a 3 on all datacenters. That's just one of many examples.

There are normally a few things that don't change during updates and this update is very abnormal. 3 different scores for the same domain on different datacenters, wow, never seen that before.

Shaun - it's not a canonical issue at all. I double checked it before I posted it earlier.

Either the data centres have gone FUBAR or PageRank has left the building. Google slapping everyone else I can understand but self flagellation? Surely not...

I've been granted a PR4 from unranked and I'm rather happy about it, ultimately, PageRank does and will matter IMHO. There may be skepticism and mockery, but it is a plain fact.

Just checked a dozen or so of my sites. Most of them have dropped two points. None of them have ever been involved in paid linking or dubious linking policies. These include some of my client sites. I've been very clean with my client sites.

My own? Bollocks. Reap the whirlwind and all that but I'm not prepared to play games with other peoples livelihoods.

Ladies and gentlemen, PageRank has left the building.

Absolutely mad-well I've now slipped to a nice juicy pr2- hmmn must be those nofollowed alinks to TLA and PPP ...
• AndyBeard · 2 years ago
Rob I distinctly remember you writing a paid review for Bidvertiser I think... which had nofollow on the links as well.
• robwatts · 2 years ago
Yes - you're right I did, just the one mind, labelled it as such too. But why shoul'd they really care about what I do, or what any of us do. This is all so unecessary really.

I blogged on this whole thing earlier, wasn't going to but decided for the better. In terms of me and my PR2 I also thought it might have been a nofollow thing, or perhaps it's an anti google thing - maybe someone didn't like my constructive critiques...Jees, who know's what goes on in their heads these days, they really do need to get out of that bunker mentality.

Silent FUD helps no one but them and their slanted view of people like me and you and everyone else who likes to get out there and see how things work.

We all have a right to earn a living, they seem to want to cut certain routes off at the pass.

Something is very much out of kilter with regard to their relative power and the parasitic nature of its foundations. I can't help but feel that its in some way wrong for an internet gateway (which is what Google has become) to have such restrictive powers of restraint of trade over others, in favour of themselves.

Who governs the ungoverned?

This reminds me of 2001 monthly Google updates. Florida and Jagger come to mind. There is nothing to do but wait until things update, although it is more fun to speculate and share meaningful information.
• robwatts · 2 years ago
Yes it's reminiscent of those wmw threads of old where you'd see your green oscillate between various states and have a mini heart attack when it went grey!

You'd think we'd have seen some kind of clarification or statement by now, even if its just the usual pronouncement from Mr C saying we've done this and that and you'd better do as we tell you, or else.

With just over 200 sites I have been checking as many as I can and am seeing a pattern across the board. My websites which have been neglected are all dropping while most of my blogs are remaining status quo. The blogs that I keep fresh are all on the rise some as much as 3 - 4 points. I also notice that Adsense is a mess and has been for the past few days.

I have no paid links and am not part of a link network so to me it appears that content and frequency of posts seem to be playing a factor at least for those of us not being penalized.

The dust has yet to settle though so the final tab may yet change.

I think real conclusions can only be made after the dust clears. Give it one week and I think then we'll be able to see the final PR until the next update comes (if it ever will).

Some of my sites got from unranked to 4, one dropped from 4 to 3.

Let's see what the Google God has in store for all of us.

Well, I did end up taking a ding today - on my home page, which ironically enough not only has no text link ads, it has no advertising at all.

I only went down from a PR5 to a PR4 - but still it irks me. My own blog has stayed the same at a PR5.

I can only guess at this point that the inbound links going to my home page have taken a beating and I'm feeling a trickle-down effect. So you can play by the rules and still feel the G-slap. :|

Just for more data... http://www.aspdotnetstorefront.com/ was a PR7, dropped to a 6. Classic ecomm website that has been around for years. Fresh content, never paid for a link.

I got started with a little project on blog building to show some friends how to create a blog from the ground up.

I worked on it very sporadically, with no real effort at all

I began it in the spring.

Did maybe 3 posts a month

recently have picked up speed to maybe 3 posts a week for the past few weeks.

It just went from PR0 to PR5 as of today

I've done no marketing that I know of other than promoting my rss feed using RSS submit when I first began. That's it.

I like it

My site went from PR4 to PR3. I wonder when the PR toolbar update will become stable. Anyhow, I am not too bothered as I don't sell links on the site (higher PR as shown on the toolbar means you're more able to sell links at higher prices). PR from toolbar does not dictate traffic, keyword targetting does.

It would be - well, amusing I think is the most polite word I can think of if this whole event was a mistake, and we are now seeing Google correcting the bug.
But it seems unlikely.

The most important thing that is occurring is that we are not seeing any reports of a drop in SE referrals from the sites where we are seeing a drop in TBPR.
With two updates in several days we may well be seeing current PR in the toolbar (oh my god!).
Current data!
If there is not a drop in referals reported by the owners, or a drop in observable rankings, to go with the drop in PR.
Then - does this mean that PR DOESN'T FACTOR INTO THE ALGO ANYMORE??

Similar to Adam (several comments prior to this one), my site (old site, but new domain) has moved from a PR 0 to a PR 3. Seems like a real toolbar update and if I recall correctly this is just the second update this year making it overdue, no?

I have seen some other sites which i run go down from 7 to 6 and many other sites from 6 to 5. These are just product / company sites, i.e no blogs and they don't sell links.

I just think Google raised the bar - i.e its now simply more difficult to get a pagerank 6 or 7. Its 'just' going to be harder work to get a pagerank 7 and up....

Well, it looks like it's pretty much settled, for now. This is the craziest update I've ever seen. One site that I literally haven't updated or marketed for nearly a year went from a 3 to a 5 (stupid) while my blog, which I've been updating daily and building links for months now stayed at a measly 3.

Of course TBPR doesn't mean a whole lot, but you've got to admit, it's nice to see that bar fill up on sites you work your ass off on.

How can a one month old blog with less than 60 backlinks ( http://www.showcasepoint.com )are getting PR5 from PR0 ? It does not make any sense at all. Can we turst Google PageRank anymore?
• AndyBeard · 2 years ago
Ray, very easy

It has a lot more links than you think
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link:http://ww...

some of those links were quite fresh, and from quality sites like Mashable. In fact the Mashable link was probably just around the time the data was exported by Google.

I have PR5 sites which have received just 30 links from blogs, plus a couple of other links I have placed in various places - say less than 35 links in total that are PR5

I have written in the past that all these link exchange memes do nothing to really improve Google Juice, just as they provide very little traffic.

That syndicated excerpt isn't a penalty.
I have the same problem.

http://www.google.be/search?q=freelance+seo
The article on Rssdump.be is a syndicated version of my post. It comes before the article on my blog(rssdump 2, my post 3. I hope you see the same results overthere)

When the post was first made he was on spot 1.
But those syndicated rss on rssdump don't only do better then my blog. It happens with most feeds syndicated there.

I don't think that's a penalty. It's more an algoritm that doesn't do his work like it should be done.

If Google turned out the toolbar pagerank and stopped making so much controverse about it they actually could start and do something about real problems.

Another site of me disappeared completely. A few months old and i have the habbit to let them grow slow in the beginning. I did nothing wrong but the site completely dropped out off the index. No penalty just vanished from Google's internet.
We'll see if it comes back.

I know what is normal on my domain, for the content I publish, and based upon how long it takes for Google to account for link attribution, even when full articles of mine are syndicated on WebProNews or other more powerful domains.

There is a big difference between a domain with just over 1000 links reported by Yahoo, though I am not sure how many of those are nofollowed and quality, and this domain with over 40,000.

The article itself gained backlinks from over 30 domains, and it normally takes a week for that to kick in, even when something is syndicated.

I know I know PR does not matter. But this is an interesting story to follow. One thing I came across was Brian gardners post about how his PR did not change which is great for him. But my question is this.
One site of his with a PR6 was only started in August 2007 2-3 months old. I asked him how this could be and he said must be people linking to me. Does google think that this site, WITH NO CONTENT except for looks, is THAT important after only 3 months just because of links. Yahoo showed about 24,000?

Anyone?
• AndyBeard · 2 years ago
I think you have to pay more for the revolution theme to have the attribution link removed. That is one of the places he is getting the juice from.

This update proves that Google are doing nothing to counteract Wordpress theme for pagerank development.

The only thing is that it is now harder for Wordpress Theme developers to monetize.

Well, I survived with my PR5 intact despite my TextLinkAds!

However, looking around my pals in the Japan niche, about half of them with TLAs got clobbered a couple of points, with one getting knocked from 6 to 3, but the blog is also part of a big network, so excluding these mutual links PR3 or PR4 is a more accurate score, IMO.

Andy, what is your advice to people with TLAs? TLA provides me personally with my advertising and experimentation budget, and I place my TLAs above the fold, so I like to think I am giving people value for money, not PageRank for money!

At this point this probably falls into the "beating a dead horse" category, but I just took a look at some directories to see what the PR hit. Most of the major players like Yahoo, Business and BOTW held their PR. But here is a random list of others that did not.

I have a weird situation.... on my site I was a PR2. I had a nonupdated blog up there and it held onto that PR2 for a while. Then recently I installed wordpress fresh on there. Deleted all my old posts and everything. But wordpress on a /blog/ subdirectory. I've been posting about 7x a week since the blog opened. No TLA or adsense, just some affiliate banners (which the blog had before as well). I dropped to a PR1! Interesting stuff - but I definitely agree the fascination with PR is ridiculous.

Thanks for this article Andy. Here's what I don't understand...

Why does google have to make this stuff so secretive?

I have 5 or 6 wordpress blogs and a couple build-a-niche-store sites. The oldest site is about 4 months old. The newest is about 1 month old.

I've only focused on building quality links for one of those sites, and it went from PR0 to PR4 with this update. One the internal pages went to PR5.

My newest blog (1 month old) went to PR3.

My 2 BANS sites went to PR3 and I've never created 1 incoming link to either of those sites.

I have noticed a significant increase in traffic to my PR4 site since the update, but with all of the talk about PR not impacting search results, now I'm just confused.

All I want is a little clarity from Google so I know how to build my sites. Is it like this with every PR update?

In regards to the search examples you cited (with quotes and without) Andy, I've been seeing the very same thing with some of the properties I keep an eye on.

It appears to me that it's not a "penalty" per se, but that they've really tightened the screws on what they are considering "could be" duplicated content regardless of the source.

In the instances I've been able to look at, as little as a 2-3 sentances that are used as snippets have been enough cause problems, especially when those snippets lead the page code.

In one particular example I've been looking at, the page can only be returned with an exact phrase search. A general search will return external pages using the snippet, or another lower ranking internal page, but the original document cannot be found. In doing a "dirty check" it appears to me that the original document has been moved to what was/is the "supplemental index" and as such, is dampened.

It definitely has more to do that just paid links. I have never bough or sold a link in my life and my web design site just dropped from a PR4 to a PR1. All of the Inner pages are PR2 and the portfolio with all the unrelated links on it is a PR3. I really dont get it. It must have something to do with my backlinks pointed to the index page of my site. I had a PR4 with 12 backlinks about 2 months ago. Then I started to build links at social bookmarking sites and mostly on blogrolls and top commentator links on good, related, blogs with lots of indexed pages so my backlinks grew fast to about 4k+ from all the blogs. I think they may have thought I purchased links on these blogs since they were sitewide....kinda sad.

Has this resulted in any effect on your SERPs or traffic, Andy?
• AndyBeard · 2 years ago
Dane it is really impossible to say because overall PageRank has very little effect on search results which are more specific to topics.

I seem to have had a very slight drop in indexed pages in the primary index using the /* method, down about 100, but those numbers fluctuate all the time anyway and I recently dropped my translation plugin which could account for those easily.

The big problem is "what happens next"

Dane it is really impossible to say because overall PageRank has very little effect on search results which are more specific to topics.

I seem to have had a very slight drop in indexed pages in the primary index using the /* method, down about 100, but those numbers fluctuate all the time anyway and I recently dropped my translation plugin which could account for those easily.

The big problem is "what happens next"

I am definitely at PR1 :(
Today I've sent an email using Google WebMaster Tool to request a reconsideration. To do that I had to say that I was guilty.
I actually felt guilty for a post I did a while ago which was Andy Coate's ViralLink (or something like that). I nofollowed all the link on that post and now I'm waiting for an answer.

I had the strange thing that my blog at www.semmy.name had "unrated" for several weeks all of a sudden after I had redirected the domain to my main site www.semmy.com for maintenance reasons and it was PR4 before and boom the page rank was gone.

Now after this dubious update I got my PR 2 back.

But honestly, I only think that PR for blogs matters for people using services like payperpost.com who offer your "more opportunities" to blog post for advertisers.

Who knows.

I'm still new so I haven't gotten my page PR-ed yet. From what I've been reading so far, it seems like I'll have a harder job boosting my rankings.

Hi all

i have a site timeandattendance.co.uk that has been online for over 2 weeks but still isnt in google? how can i tell if i am banned

thanks in advance

Paullas you have a massive network of minisites which seem to only have links from each other, and even your primary site, thefirst.co.uk doesn't have a lot of juice.

The site in question does seem to be indexed, but I wouldn't count on that for long based upon how you are inter-connecting everything so blatantly, and the low value people gain from visiting your sites which would certainly class as doorway or thin affiliate sites, even if the single page of content is unique.

Paul, if you are Weblogs Inc, you can get away with it

Wordpress.com get away with it with their <strike>linkfarm</strike> internal tagging system

B5 Media only use interlinking in topical communities

Your pages are just single pages on domains, and you have lots of interlinking between unrelated sites.

It isn't going to be effective in Google, it might work partially for MSN and Yahoo.

Ultimately you want to have unique links coming into each domain and some smart interlinking between horizontal and vertical niches.

My site was about 2 months old at this update which I thought would be too young to even get any recognition. However, I went from being an n/a to a PR0, so at least I am there now - I guess the only way is up! 2 other sites I work with have gone straight from n/a to PR2 in about 3 months though which I was surprised at. They have got good backlinks from the parent site which I suspect is the key here.

I can't say that I saw a difference in October or in the recent re-ranking that happened in January. Still PR 3 for the real estate website and the blog. It looks like folks around me have shifted, but I'm still hanging out at 3.

I would not worry so much about Page Rank. Now a days, it is more about eye balls than the green pixels!
