I'll remember this occasion as the very brief moment in time when my humble little blog had the same PR as ProBlogger and yours. :-D

I've given up trying to second guess what's happening. My gut feeling is that there is a slap happening and it's going to take a couple of weeks for the dust to settle.
I also wonder, as Maki did over at Sphinn, whether or not Big G have noted the furore over this and are perhaps adjusting the manual penalties dished out to the higher profile or more vocal sites.
UPDATE: Just noticed one of my other sites has dropped from PR6 to PR4 in the last couple of hours :(

There are still "punishments in reputation" on that list, just look at Everton at Connected Internet, though that might resolve to a 5 eventually.

PageRank shouldn't matter because it's obviously a joke. That doesn't change reality though. Without question your business has been hurt because of this and in all you should be compensated.

You know, it would make sense. AdSense data has been screwed through all of this too.

This is definitely looking like a penalty for selling links from my analysis - and not a blog network linking penalty.

I wonder what the heck they are up to! Oh how they would benefit from some transparency at this point.

It's just like the good old days of DC watching again isn't it!
I think Courtney Tuttle will settle at a PR3 if the results across the network of sites I monitor are to be borne out here too.
I actually think the new PR brings a (very little) of respect back to the green bar (dare I say that) :)
Sites with a more obvious manufactured or irrelevant (?) linking profile / PR (some of mine included) seem to have been hit. I always have a few quality links in any link profile I massage so I didn't get hit too bad (don't sell links either, anywhere).
Good bit of research - will be Sphinning it (that got a PR 6 by the way).

For instance, my blog which received a PR3 shortly after it was created after the April update. That was after doing VERY little with the blog and I do mean little.
Now I've built the blog considerably and expect a 4 or 5 and it's still showing a 3 on all datacenters. That's just one of many examples.
There are normally a few things that don't change during updates and this update is very abnormal. 3 different scores for the same domain on different datacenters, wow, never seen that before.

Either the data centres have gone FUBAR or PageRank has left the building. Google slapping everyone else I can understand but self flagellation? Surely not...

P.S. YouTube showing a PR3 is hilarious!

My own? Bollocks. Reap the whirlwind and all that but I'm not prepared to play games with other peoples livelihoods.
Ladies and gentlemen, PageRank has left the building.

I blogged on this whole thing earlier, wasn't going to but decided for the better. In terms of me and my PR2 I also thought it might have been a nofollow thing, or perhaps it's an anti google thing - maybe someone didn't like my constructive critiques...Jees, who know's what goes on in their heads these days, they really do need to get out of that bunker mentality.
Silent FUD helps no one but them and their slanted view of people like me and you and everyone else who likes to get out there and see how things work.
We all have a right to earn a living, they seem to want to cut certain routes off at the pass.
Something is very much out of kilter with regard to their relative power and the parasitic nature of its foundations. I can't help but feel that its in some way wrong for an internet gateway (which is what Google has become) to have such restrictive powers of restraint of trade over others, in favour of themselves.
Who governs the ungoverned?

You'd think we'd have seen some kind of clarification or statement by now, even if its just the usual pronouncement from Mr C saying we've done this and that and you'd better do as we tell you, or else.

I have no paid links and am not part of a link network so to me it appears that content and frequency of posts seem to be playing a factor at least for those of us not being penalized.
The dust has yet to settle though so the final tab may yet change.

Some of my sites got from unranked to 4, one dropped from 4 to 3.
Let's see what the Google God has in store for all of us.

Looks like your PR may recover after all. My case is beyond hope lol. Maybe it is Googles way to let us know that the toolbar PR will be updated dynamically and will change from day to day? :)

I only went down from a PR5 to a PR4 - but still it irks me. My own blog has stayed the same at a PR5.
I can only guess at this point that the inbound links going to my home page have taken a beating and I'm feeling a trickle-down effect. So you can play by the rules and still feel the G-slap. :|

Just for more data... http://www.aspdotnetstorefront.com/ was a PR7, dropped to a 6. Classic ecomm website that has been around for years. Fresh content, never paid for a link.

I worked on it very sporadically, with no real effort at all
I began it in the spring.
Did maybe 3 posts a month
recently have picked up speed to maybe 3 posts a week for the past few weeks.
It just went from PR0 to PR5 as of today
I've done no marketing that I know of other than promoting my rss feed using RSS submit when I first began. That's it.

But it seems unlikely.
The most important thing that is occurring is that we are not seeing any reports of a drop in SE referrals from the sites where we are seeing a drop in TBPR.
With two updates in several days we may well be seeing current PR in the toolbar (oh my god!).
Current data!
If there is not a drop in referals reported by the owners, or a drop in observable rankings, to go with the drop in PR.
Then - does this mean that PR DOESN'T FACTOR INTO THE ALGO ANYMORE??

I just think Google raised the bar - i.e its now simply more difficult to get a pagerank 6 or 7. Its 'just' going to be harder work to get a pagerank 7 and up....

Of course TBPR doesn't mean a whole lot, but you've got to admit, it's nice to see that bar fill up on sites you work your ass off on.

<li>It has a lot more links than you think
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link:http://ww...
</li>
<li>some of those links were quite fresh, and from quality sites like Mashable. In fact the Mashable link was probably just around the time the data was exported by Google.</li>
<li>I have PR5 sites which have received just 30 links from blogs, plus a couple of other links I have placed in various places - say less than 35 links in total that are PR5</li>
</ol>
I have written in the past that all these link exchange memes do nothing to really improve Google Juice, just as they provide very little traffic.

I have the same problem.

The article on Rssdump.be is a syndicated version of my post. It comes before the article on my blog(rssdump 2, my post 3. I hope you see the same results overthere)
When the post was first made he was on spot 1.
But those syndicated rss on rssdump don't only do better then my blog. It happens with most feeds syndicated there.
I don't think that's a penalty. It's more an algoritm that doesn't do his work like it should be done.
If Google turned out the toolbar pagerank and stopped making so much controverse about it they actually could start and do something about real problems.
Another site of me disappeared completely. A few months old and i have the habbit to let them grow slow in the beginning. I did nothing wrong but the site completely dropped out off the index. No penalty just vanished from Google's internet.
We'll see if it comes back.
There is a big difference between a domain with just over 1000 links reported by Yahoo, though I am not sure how many of those are nofollowed and quality, and this domain with over 40,000.
The article itself gained backlinks from over 30 domains, and it normally takes a week for that to kick in, even when something is syndicated.

One site of his with a PR6 was only started in August 2007 2-3 months old. I asked him how this could be and he said must be people linking to me. Does google think that this site, WITH NO CONTENT except for looks, is THAT important after only 3 months just because of links. Yahoo showed about 24,000?
Anyone?
This update proves that Google are doing nothing to counteract Wordpress theme for pagerank development.
The only thing is that it is now harder for Wordpress Theme developers to monetize.

However, looking around my pals in the Japan niche, about half of them with TLAs got clobbered a couple of points, with one getting knocked from 6 to 3, but the blog is also part of a big network, so excluding these mutual links PR3 or PR4 is a more accurate score, IMO.
Andy, what is your advice to people with TLAs? TLA provides me personally with my advertising and experimentation budget, and I place my TLAs above the fold, so I like to think I am giving people value for money, not PageRank for money!

Why does google have to make this stuff so secretive?
I have 5 or 6 wordpress blogs and a couple build-a-niche-store sites. The oldest site is about 4 months old. The newest is about 1 month old.
I've only focused on building quality links for one of those sites, and it went from PR0 to PR4 with this update. One the internal pages went to PR5.
My newest blog (1 month old) went to PR3.
My 2 BANS sites went to PR3 and I've never created 1 incoming link to either of those sites.
I have noticed a significant increase in traffic to my PR4 site since the update, but with all of the talk about PR not impacting search results, now I'm just confused.
All I want is a little clarity from Google so I know how to build my sites. Is it like this with every PR update?

It appears to me that it's not a "penalty" per se, but that they've really tightened the screws on what they are considering "could be" duplicated content regardless of the source.
In the instances I've been able to look at, as little as a 2-3 sentances that are used as snippets have been enough cause problems, especially when those snippets lead the page code.
In one particular example I've been looking at, the page can only be returned with an exact phrase search. A general search will return external pages using the snippet, or another lower ranking internal page, but the original document cannot be found. In doing a "dirty check" it appears to me that the original document has been moved to what was/is the "supplemental index" and as such, is dampened.

I seem to have had a very slight drop in indexed pages in the primary index using the /* method, down about 100, but those numbers fluctuate all the time anyway and I recently dropped my translation plugin which could account for those easily.
The big problem is "what happens next"

Today I've sent an email using Google WebMaster Tool to request a reconsideration. To do that I had to say that I was guilty.
I actually felt guilty for a post I did a while ago which was Andy Coate's ViralLink (or something like that). I nofollowed all the link on that post and now I'm waiting for an answer.

Now after this dubious update I got my PR 2 back.
But honestly, I only think that PR for blogs matters for people using services like payperpost.com who offer your "more opportunities" to blog post for advertisers.
Who knows.

i have a site timeandattendance.co.uk that has been online for over 2 weeks but still isnt in google? how can i tell if i am banned
thanks in advance

The site in question does seem to be indexed, but I wouldn't count on that for long based upon how you are inter-connecting everything so blatantly, and the low value people gain from visiting your sites which would certainly class as doorway or thin affiliate sites, even if the single page of content is unique.

Wordpress.com get away with it with their <strike>linkfarm</strike> internal tagging system
B5 Media only use interlinking in topical communities
Your pages are just single pages on domains, and you have lots of interlinking between unrelated sites.
It isn't going to be effective in Google, it might work partially for MSN and Yahoo.
Ultimately you want to have unique links coming into each domain and some smart interlinking between horizontal and vertical niches.
