Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion: In Depth: Google BlogSearch | Ranking Blog Documents Patent

    Nice analysis, Andy.

I hadn't noticed that the filing date of the patent, and the launch date of Google blog search were the same day - great catch.

Google reader may have been one of the things that they had in mind when they were putting the patent together - they should have a much easier time gaining access to subscription numbers from that than from other services not under their control, but who knows for certain.

Andy, in your opinion what factors determine which blogs show up in the "Related Blogs" section when one does a search for a specific keyword phrase?

For example, when I do a search for make money online my blog shows up in the related posts section, alongside several others.

That is a very interesting search result, because John Chow isn't there.

It seems like anchor text for blog search is much less important, otherwise I am sure John Chow would be listed there.

In any case, my blog is no longer listed in the "Related Blogs" section. Looks like they rotate the sites featured..one of the websites currently listed isn't even a blog. :)

I have to admit that I was a little bit shocked when I read a certain portion of this post regarding social bookmarking links...you said that many of them are strict with "nofollow." That's incredibly odd to me considering the fact that social bookmarking is extensively dependent on links without the linking aspect, there's no way to do the bookmarking. If I log in and look at my friends links, I can't use them to get the pages they were raving about. How silly is that? I think that the social bookmarking sites deserve credit for getting users to participate in their service and bookmark links through said service, don't you? On that same token, do you think it's fair that your blog should be given the opportunity to get the higher google rankings based on linking when other services and blogs are not afforded the same opportunity due to the nofollow rules of many sites and links? It seems that Google is taking their rules and managing to weed out some very great bloggers and other pages simply because of clicking and linking that isn't available to everyone.

I’ve just made my blog and I noticed that the keyword search doesn’t work in it. For instance, I posted something entitled Jeep: Manila’s Finest. But when I searched for this post using the exact words I was told that there’s no match in my search.

This is where including a link to your blog which tells me something about you, rather than to your company site with anchor text that suggests you might have just commented for a link doesn't serve your purpose.

I would have been happy to help diagnose the problem

"If I log in and look at my friends links, I can't use them to get the pages they were raving about. How silly is that"

That isn't what nofollow does, fragrances.

No follow primarily means that Google does not pass Page Rank or count the link as a backlink in the backlink counts. People can still click on the links and visit the pages.
