If you have a nice easy template that you can dump content into you can make these sites very quickly, upload them, promote them some and see if Google will like the within a few days.

That's great. I've often thought that, but this is the first time I think I've ever seen anything like it in print. Until you start getting traffic it doesn't matter, because clearly Google and Co can't identify crap from quality.

The key is to not procrastinate trying to create perfection, because nothing is ever going to be perfect, and once you achieve perfection, it might not make any money.
Much better to get something out there (this is a general rule) than to try to perfect something that isn't going to work.
With Blogrush John could have spent another year working on it, and it still wouldn't have been perfect. It is quite possible he also spent too long working on it, that happens, certainly with me.
I still have the widget because I know that John is working on this.
Sorry for the confusion...
As for being in the sidebar from day 1... This is again "Speed of Inplementation".

One of the sites I make the most on was initially released with crap (barely rehashed wikipedia content). It made a few buck here and there, but nothing major. But those few bucks helped pay for some better, unique, content and marketing. Now it ranks on the first page for a legal/financial term.
I think the benefit of releasing that way is it's faster. By then going back and adding better content you have that benefit of a more "aged" site than if you waited to launch. At least that's been my experience.

Thanks for featuring my post here. It's amazing. Your blog is an "Authority" for me...
Just wanted to clarify things a little bit...
I learned so much from John and specially from this sentence (release crap).
It was an article... I just tried to find it, but without success.
Anyway, Andy said it best "Much better to get something out there (this is a general rule) than to try to perfect something that isn't going to work."
Think about windows xp, vista and microsoft. That doesn't mean that it is "pure crap", but that it's "almost finished"
All the best Andy.

Pierre Trudeau once said "It is better to have an imperfect SOMETHING than a perfect nothing"
I tell this to all the nay-sayers at mom's groups who want to make money with a blog BUT
- don't know how to build a website
- don't know anything anyone else would care about
- don't have time
- are not good "at that kind of thing"
argh. I tell people if you can send an email you can write a blog.
Just jump in and learn as you go.
I will admit that when people start reading and are faced with finer points of blogging/affiliate/marketing/SEO they get freaked out and run.... bit intimidating to some one starting out.

For newbies like me, we just have the tendency to spend too much time and effort on trying to come out with a perfect site or blog without realizing that it slows us down way too much.
In internet marketing, I guess what counts is to work as fast as you can in the best way that you can.

One quick question: Is it better to leverage the existing site's URL (PR5) or should the blog be under different URL. Thoughts on common look and feel between the 2 sites would also be appreciated.

Mark Twain found his writing style by mirroring others.
Thomas Edison borrowed from others
Albert Einstein borrowed from others.
The most successful rarely come up with their own completely new material or ideas. They just take existing ones and do it better than anyone else. They arent better at coming up with ideas, theyre just better at running with them.

I started out with reading Holly Mann's "Honest Riches" all the ebook said was that niche markets are tough to find. Then I did SBI, there was a whole weeks worth of lessons dedicated to developing your site concept. Basically :
1. Start with 3 site concepts. Something you like enough to write content about constantly
2. Check the supply and demand of your market on Google
3.Secret ingredient people forget about---Is there a starving market?? This is key
Best of luck!
